Vale travelled to Mere to play top of the table Europa Exiles having received sad news of the passing of legendary scorer John Roylance. After a minutes' silence Vale were asked to field first and Diddymen Max Lloyd and Damo Paul opened on a lively wicket. Max was first to strike getting Davies to edge to the ageless John Ryan (no birth certificates in those days) for 12 at 26. Hodgson and Patel moved the score to 43 before Neil Mitchell, with his first ball, had the former well-juggled by Matt (remember the name) Jones for 20. Dowell and Patel then quickly added 48 before the latter edged Neil to captain Johnson for 26. The scoring was slowed as Nick Barker 0-26 off 6 and Wild Bill Crowson 0-20 off 8, kept things in check. However Vale had to wait until Maximus bowled Dowall for 69 and Damo had Headford caught by Lord Stacey for 33. The innings ended at 182-5: Max 2-33, Neil 2-49, Damo 1-21.
Mike Drape and John Ryan opened. At 9 John was caught behind off Clinton for 7.The captain helped Papa bring the score to 44 before nicking Joshi behind for 17. Nick and Papa kept Vale in the game before the former was adjudged LBW for 23 at 92. Matt was LBW at 100 and last weeks batting hero Ted was bowled by Mistry for 7. With the run rate required going up Paps started to hit, passing 50 before being caught off Davies at 125 for a great 61.Neil went at 138 for 7 before young Max showed the world he could bat finally falling at 155 for 21. Needing 27 off 9 balls Lord Stacey was caught first ball before Bill (2) and Josh (9) saw out the last over, Vale finishing at 163-9. A great effort on a sad day.
