Bowdon Vale Cricket Club Match Reports - 2008

Saturday 13th September:

1st XI Home: BVCC 176-9. Alde= rley Park 131 all out. BVCC won by 45 runs.

The Vale completed their amazing relegation escape act from the Meller Braggins 2nd Division with a victory in their f= inal game at Priory Street. The prophets of doom had the Vale relegated by mid June when their points t= ally stood at 33 from their first 8 games. However they had not reckoned on the fighting spirit of Nigel Halsall and his boys, = as a terrific turnaround saw the Vale capture 191 points from their remaining ga= mes, form that was bordering on promotion material. On Saturday, 25 points was t= he order of the day. Batting first on a very damp wicket was always going to be difficult, and a watchful eye was required to counter the awkward and slow bounce. Although Noman Has= an made light of the conditions to post a quick fire 35, the Vale slumped to 8= 6-8. To emphasize the Vale strength in batting Mike Lancaster and Steve Bottomley set about repairing the damage. A partnersh= ip 70 followed to take the Vale past the 170 mark and maximum batting points. Lancas= ter finished within a fine 60 and Bottomley 24 not = out. At the tea interval, so far so good for the Vale. In r= eply Hasan made a break through in his second over to give= the Vale the impetus required to force a victory. Alderley Park were still in the game with skipper Carr still at the wicket. The Vale were able to take wickets at the other end as skipper Halsa= ll rotated his bowling attack. It was Halsall with= 4-42 and Hasan 3-27 aided by a run out and a wicket a piece for Jack Halsall and Andy Shakespeare, that saw the Vale to victory with just 9 balls to spare. Carr finish= ing with a fine 63 not out. News then filtered through to the club house of def= eats for both Wilmslow and Chester CO as the celebrations commenced with the Vale safety assured.

2nd XI Away: Trafford MV 105 all out. BVCC 106-3. BV= CC won by 7 wickets.

Paul Allen’s boys kept up their winning form with a comprehensive victory = at near neighbours Trafford MV. Batting first the hosts had no answer to Allen 4-21, Willson 2-19 and the evergreen Bill Crowson 4-15, as they struggled to painfully slow to = 105 all out in 45 overs. In reply the Vale had litt= le trouble knocking off the runs with Fenton 15, Roberts 43 not out and Turner 29 not = out as the Vale returned home with 25 points.

Saturday 6th September:

1st XI Away: Lymm OP. No play – rain.

2nd XI Home: Castrol. No play – rain.

Saturday 30th August:

1st XI Home: BVCC 185-9. Wilmslow 99 all out. BVCC wo= n by 86 runs.

The Vale gained a massive 25 point return against fellow relegation strugglers Wilmslow, with an emphatic 86 run victory at Priory Street, to keep their 2= nd Division survival hopes very much alive.   Skipper Nigel Halsall’s call for a positive team performance = was answered by solid contributions all the way down the batting order and a magnificent 7-23 return by opening bowler Noman= Hasan. Upon winning the toss, Ha= lsall elected to bat first and Andy Shakespeare set the tone of the innings with three glorious boundaries in the first over to set the Vale on their way. Williamson 33, Hasan 23, O= llier 23 and Rutter 32 kept up the momentum, as the V= ale achieved their first priority of 170 to obtain maximum batting points. A br= ave early declaration by Halsall saw the Vale leave Wilmslow with 48 overs to reach their victory t= arget of 186. Any thoughts of Wilmslow threatening the Vale total was soon dispel= led as Hasan got to work with opening partner Jack = Halsall. The introduction of skipper Halsall into the attack, extracting bounce and swing from the bottom end caused fur= ther problems for Wilmslow. However it was Hasan bac= ked up by some keen fielding who did the real damage, returning seasons best figur= es of 7-23 off 17 overs. Skipper Halsall 2-38 and Awais Athar with the final wicket wrapped up the Wilmslow innings with 12 overs to spare.

2nd XI Away: BVCC 126 all out. Wilmslow 51 all out. = BVCC won by 75 runs.

The 2nd XI made it a 25 point win double over Wilmslow with a resounding win at Wilmslow Leisure centre. Batting first the 2nd XI posted a disappointing 12= 6, with a welcome return to form for Keith Fenton with 64 and Iain Johnson 21 = the main contributors. In reply Wilmslow never really posed a real threat as fi= ne opening spells from Willson 3-14 and Allen 4-16= soon had the home side reeling. A couple of wickets for James Callwood and one for Abdul Afzal wrapped up the Wilmslow innings and saw the Vale stroll to a comfortable 75 run victory.

Saturday 23rd August:

1st XI Away: BVCC 130-8. Barrow 134-3. Barrow won by 7 wickets.

Visiting high-flying Barrow, the Vale won the toss and elected to bat. After a slow start, Andy Shakespeare (55) joined Ian Froggatt (33) at 33-2 and took the score past 90 off 32 overs= to provide a solid third wicket partnership. With Froggat= t in the anchor role, Shakespeare played freely, hitting the ball to all part= s of the ground. A magnificent athletic caught-and-bowled by Barclay ended Froggatt’s resistance and the remaining Vale ba= tsmen failed to take the advantage, ending with a below par score of 130. In repl= y, the Barrow openers batted cautiously, with Jack Halsal= l the pick of the Vale bowlers only conceding 5 runs of his allowed 6 overs.  = The rain came to play its part and with a wet ball the Vale struggled to keep the pressure on and Barrow ultimately gained a comfortable victory with 7 wicke= ts and 14 overs to spare.

2nd XI Home: Kingsley 142 all out. BVCC 85 allout. Kingsley won by 57 runs.

The Vale 2nd XI played hosts to Kingsley who struggled in the early stages of t= heir innings against tight Vale bowling but then recovered to post 142 thanks to= 39 from man-of-the match Storey. Ian Willson was t= he pick of the Vale attack with a return of 3-36. The Vale innings failed to g= et started as Storey (3-28) created an early advantage for Kingsley who finall= y dismissed the Vale for 85, only Afzal managing any real resistance with an unbeaten 55.

Saturday 16th August:

1st XI Home: BVCC 161 all out. Cheshire CO 137-8. Match drawn.

The Vale hosted fellow relegation strugglers Chester County Officers at Priory Street in a crucial ‘must win’ game for both sides. Before the start the Va= le had high hopes for a 25 point return to keep their survival hopes alive and gain ground on their rivals; however they eventually had to settle for 14 d= raw points. Skipper Halsall won the toss and electe= d to bat first. Against an ordinary Chester attack, the Vale batting line up proceeded in suicidal fashion, slumping to= 42 for 7 off just 18 overs. A rearguard recovery w= as instigated by skipper Halsall with 25 as the la= st three wickets added 120 runs and importantly used up the remaining overs. Shakespeare 31, the returning Darren Rutter 38 and Ascott 15 n= ot out all sensibly set about rebuilding the Vale innings, taking them to just sho= rt of 170 for the maximum batting points.  Chester’s reply followed a si= milar path to that of the Vale as they were left reeling at 38 for 5 against the bowling of Halsall and Has= an. Pownall played am anchor role and along with Jo= hnson brought the visitors back into the game, in deteriorating and wet conditions the game seemed to be slipping away from the Vale. The fall of Johnson for = 47 and Jones 15, brought an end to the visitors run chase as they settled for 9 draw points. Halsall bowled a marathon spell of= 22 overs returning 3-2, Hasan finishing with 2-28 and Shakespeare 1-28. Not the points return the Vale had hoped for, nevertheless with four games and 100 points still to play for; survival hopes are still alive and kicking.

2nd XI Away: Cheshire <= st1:State w:st=3D"on">CO 241-6. BVCC 19-= 0. Match abandoned – rain.

The Vale 2nd XI made a fruitless trip to Chester. The home side were able to complete their innings, before rain intervened a= nd halted the Vale reply after just 5 overs at 19 = for the loss of no wickets. Cheste= r posed 241 for 6. The two highlights for the Vale being a return of 5-53 for Ian Willson and three catches behind the stumps by 14 year old Zac Stevenson = in an accomplished wicket keeping display.

Saturday 9th August:

1st XI Away: Northwich 180-6 BVCC 55 all out. BVCC lo= st by 125 runs.

On a day to forget, the only thing that went in the Vale’s favour was the toss. Both teams were keen to pick up points on a day when most other teams were expected not to play due to heavy rain. Northwich= worked hard to make the square playable and when the rain stopped, the match was reduced to 33 overs per side. M.East started where he left off at the Vale earlier in the season with a flurry of boundaries as Northwich cruised to 180 for the = loss of 6 wickets (J.Hughes 60, M.Rebbeck 46*).  In reply, the Vale were always under pressure in poor light and when the rain started the vociferou= s Northwich team took advantage of the umpires decision= to continue playing. Wickets fell regularly with Vale ending on 55 (J.Kimber 4-7 & S.Hayes 6-16) & having to re-group for next week’s clash against relegation rivals Chester Country Officers.

2nd XI Home: Wistaston. No play – rain.<= /o:p>

Saturday 2nd August:

1st XI Home: Bowdon Vale 170-9 Winsford 191-7. Match Drawn.

The Vale 1st eleven were once again in search of vital points as the= ir quest for 2nd Division survival continued with a home game to cl= ose rivals Winsford at Priory Street. Skipper Halsall upon winning the toss asked Winsford to take first knock on a wicket dampened by overnight rain. This didn’= ;t prevent Winsford openers Cooper and Clarke raci= ng away to a flying start. Matters improved for the Vale as the visitors innin= gs progressed with two wickets a piece for Nigel Halsall<= /span> and Shakespeare, and a wicket each for Jack Halsall and Athar. The visitors clo= sing on 191-7.  In reply the Va= le had solid contributions down the order from Nicholas 18, F= roggatt 37, Hasan 23, Jack Halsall= 33, Bottomley 18 and Lancaster 20 not out. Vita= lly they were missing the one big innings that would have taken them to victory= , as Clarke 4-21 restricted the Vale. The Vale eventually ha= ving to settle for 11 draw points, 20 runs short of their victory target.

2nd XI Away: Stockport 209-5 Bowdon Vale 154-6. Match Drawn.

The 2nd eleven made the short trip to table topping Stockport where they returned with a very creditable 8 draw points. Willson and Singleton quickly accounted for both Stockport openers as the home side were reeling at 7 for 2, the champions elect were = in serious trouble. Eventually Stockport recovered to post 209-5. In reply on a flat batting track, the Vale made a decent fist of the run chase. Contributions from Ryan 30, Roberts 22, Turne= r 20 not and Allen 28 not out kept the game alive. On the day the Vale response = was missing one significant innings in order to pose a serious threat to the ho= me side. In the end the Vale settled for a very creditable 154 for the loss of= 6 wickets against a young and lively Stockport attack.

Saturday 26th July:

1st XI Away: Weaverham 234-3 BVCC 220-8. Match Drawn.=

 The Vale returned from high flying Weaverham with a= very creditable 9 draw points in a high scoring afternoon at Wallerscote Road. The home with promotion aspirations took first knock, and on a glorious afternoon the Vale bowling attack was put to the sword by Airns 68, Robertson 90 not out and Pinnington 30. On a quick outfield the Vale stuck to their task admirably in stemming the Weaverham run flow, and at the end of the home side i= nnings the Vale felt they well in the game. In reply, Mark Nicholas once again got= the Vale off to a flying start with a quick fire 28. Ian F= roggatt with 40 was joined by N.Hasan, and it was Hasan with a blistering 59 who brought the Vale well = into the game and put Weaverham on the defensive. 90= runs were required from the last 10 overs with Hasan and Ollier in full = flow. The return of Weaverham opening bowler Hemmings accounted for Ollier for 25, and the Vale were dealt a further blow when = Hasan was caught in the deep. Skipper Halsall and Bottomley attempted to keep the run chase on track but at the fall of Halsall for 16, any realistic hopes disappeared. Once again the Vale can take great heart from = this performance in pushing one of the promotion favourites right to the wire in= a close fought encounter.

2nd XI Home: BVCC 166 all out. Pott Shrigley 119 allo= ut. BVCC won by 47 runs.

 A much stronger Vale 2nd XI returned to winning ways with a comfortable 47 run victory at Priory Street over Pott <= span class=3DSpellE>Shrigley. Batting first the Vale had a number of good contributions down the batting order from Lancaster 22, Whipday 40, Roberts 22, Sullivan 18 and Callwood 20. In= reply Pott Shrigley were = never really in the hunt as Singleton 3-38, Saleem 4-= 9 and Afzal 3-23 made life difficult for the visitors as th= e Vale recorded a their second 25 point victory of the season. <= /p>

Wednesday 23rd July:

Over 40’s Home: Bowdon Vale 103-7: Romiley 104-5. RomileyBowdon Vale Vikings’ promotion hopes were dealt a blow in a close defeat aga= inst Romiley. Batting first, Vikings were tied down = by the accurate Romiley opening attack that conceded 2= 3 runs in 8 overs. Gareth Roberts (29) took the attack= to Romiley startng with 6,4,4 and Neil Halsall foll= owed suit with the same. Vikings ended on 103-7.  Romiley opening bat, Potter, provided the best possible start with 33* but tight Vikings bowling (Robinson 2-11, Crowson 2-18 &a= mp; Halsall 1-12) restricted the score to 65 off 15 overs.  = P.Hooton hit a quickfire = 30* to bring Romiley to the edge of victory which was finally achieved with 3 balls left.

Saturday 19th July:

1st XI Home: Prestbury. No play – rain.<= /o:p>

2nd XI Away: Prestbury. No play – rain.<= /o:p>

Wednesday 16th July:

Over 40’s Away: Bredbury St Marks 79-7. Bowdon = Vale 82-2. BVCC won by 8 wickets.

With promotion a distinct possibility, Bowdon Vale Vikings gave a very professional performance easily beating Bredbury with plenty of wickets and overs to spare. The Vikin= gs dominance began from the very beginning restricting Br= edbury to 3 for 2 off 3 overs and 18 for 2 off the fir= st 8 overs with excellent opening spells from both Tony Ga= rdner (4-3-2-1) and Will Crowson (4-2-16-1) - 5 maide= ns out of the first 8 overs; surely a Vikings 20/20 re= cord! Continued good bowling (Steve Robinson 4-0-13-2) and fielding restricted Bredbury to 79 for 7 off their 20 overs. Sensible batting was what was required and that is exactly what the Vikings delivered. Opening pair, Peter Thorpe (22) and Colin Rowe (16) put on nearl= y 50 for the first wicket with Gareth Roberts (25*) and Steve Bottomley (11*) seeing the Vikings home with 8 wickets and 5 ove= rs in hand. Two wins from the final two games should see the Vikings promoted though Cheadle Hulme need to slip up for the Vikings to be champions. Next = week's game against Romiley is the Viking's last at&nb= sp;Priory Street this season - home support will be greatly appreciated.

Saturday 12th July:

1st XI Home: Barnton 141-4. Bowdon Vale 142-4. BVCC= won by 6 wickets.

The Vale 1st XI made it two wins on the bounce with a resounding win against Barnton. Despite a week of heavy showers, Priory Street was in remarkably good, condition. Upon winning the toss skipper Halsall asked the visitors to take first knock. In da= mp conditions N.Hasan and Hal= sall made life difficult for the Barnton top order, = as the run rate barely crept above one an over. Hasan continued his fine start with the Vale to return 3-41, whilst skipper Halsall returned a marathon spell of 22 overs with 1-62. The highlight of the Barnton innings= was a superb low diving catch by Gareth Roberts at cover point as Barnton closed on 141. In reply opener Mark Nicholas clearly had an early Saturday evening appointment to meet, as he got the Vale off to an explosive start. = Being particularly severe on the Barnton= opening attack. Nicholas excelled in pulling several short deliveries through mid wicket and made light of the damp conditions, finishing with a = fine 66. Ryan 16 along with Lancast= er 18 took the Vale closer to their victory target as Bot= tomley 11 not out and Roberts 22 not out saw the Vale to a comfortable 6 wicket wi= n. Another fine all round team effort from the Vale, as the prospects of 2nd Division survival become more than a reality. Results elsewhere saw the Vale leapfrog Wilmslow and close in on several teams just ahead of them. More of= the same will surely see the Vale to the safety of mid table.   =

2nd XI Away: Bowdon Vale 101 all out. = Bunbury 102-5.

The 2nd XI had a long trip down the A49 for their first ever visit to league newcomers Bunbury, and what a delight was in st= ore. Everything about the hosts set up from the ground to the tea was superb. On= an excellent batting track the Vale were disappointingly bowled out for 101. Although Faupal 16, Afzal<= /span> 11 and Robinson 11 reached double figures none were able to go on and make significant contributions. It was left to Ian Willson<= /span> with 35 who gave the innings some impetus. In reply Wi= llson was the pick of the Vale bowlers with 3-35 as Bunbury<= /span> took 46 overs to reach their victory target for= the loss of 5 wickets.

Wednesday 9th July:

Over 40’s: : match abandoned due to rain.

Saturday 5th July:

1st XI Away: 0ver Peover 134 all out. Bowdon Vale 1= 38-8. BVCC won by 2 wickets.

Those pundits who had stated that the Vale were already doomed to relegation, were made to sit up and take notice as the Vale returned their second 25 point h= aul in their last four games. A short trip up the A50 to the picturesque Over <= span class=3DSpellE>Peover ground saw the Vale return home triumphant. Th= e home side elected to bat first upon winning the toss. Any expectation they had of posting a large total was soon wrecked as for the second week running N.Hasan ran through the opposition top order. Hasan was ably supported by Jack Halsall at the other end, and a much improved catching and fielding performance by = the Vale had Peover in total disarray at 60-6 and 1= 10-9, before a last wicket stand of 23 gave them some respectability. Hasan finished with 6-60, Jack H= alsall 1-13 and Awais Athar returned to form with 3-16. In reply after the loss of Nicholas for 15, a second wicket partnership of 65 between Ryan 30 and Williamson 32 saw the V= ale to a commanding position of 80-1. Once again a drinks break disrupted the V= ale progress, and the loss of Williamson singled a fall of wickets. Newcomer Mi= ke Lancaster with 27 not out steadied the Vale nerves with a responsible knock= to see the Vale to victory with overs to spare. If= the Vale can reproduce this performance and the same fighting spirit for the remainder of the season then there is no reason why their 2nd Division stat= us cannot be preserved and mid table security attained.

 = ;

2nd XI Home: Chelford 98 all out. Bowdon Vale 104-6= . BVCC won by 4 wickets.

The 2nd XI made it a double for the Vale in a rain reduced overs match as they entertained Chelford at Priory Street. Paul Allen’s boys shot Chelford out for 103 in= their 26 overs. Allen returned excellent figures of 5= -12 supported by Willson 2-25, and a wicket a piece= for Singleton and 14 year old James Callwood. In re= ply Steve Whipday was the star of the Vale batting performance with 50, supported by Gareth Roberts with 20. Finally it was Al= len and Singleton who saw the Vale over the finishing line with 4 wickets to sp= are.

Wednesday 2nd July:

Over 40’s: BVCC won by 17runs.

Black clouds then heavy rain greeted the teams as they arrived at the Vale. The V= ale, buoyant having won the last three on the bounce, were keen to play against bottom of the table strugglers Br= ooklands. The covers were on then off then on then off again before the weather impro= ved and the game began just about on time. The Vale's top order fired on all cylind= ers for the second week running with Barrett (31*), Williamson (30*) and Bottomley (33*) all retiring. Six sixes were hit in a= ll with the house and Hummer peppered as 45 runs were hit off the last 3 overs. Faced with a daunting total, the Brooklands batsmen maintained 7 an over for the first half of their innings with Derbyshire (31*) and Jones (28) being their main scorers. The pic= k of Vale's bowlers was stand-in skipper Ryan who took the game away from Brooklands with career best 20/20 figures (I presume) of 4-0-10-4 in the middle of their innings. With promotion beginning to look a possibility, selection is becoming ever more problematic.<= /o:p>

 =

Saturday 28th June:

1st XI Away: Alderley Park 170-7. Bowdon = Vale 118-9. Match drawn.

The Vale made the visit to promotion chasing Alderley Park and returned home with a very creditable draw, the final score card not doing justice to how competitive = the game was. The Vale were just missing a decent mi= ddle order partnership to swing the game in their favour at a crucial stage of t= he game.  = Alderley Park took first knock and fine ope= ning spells from Hasan and Jack Halsall had the home side in tatters at 45-5. However Shah with 56 and Berry 57 aided b= y some lackadaisical fielding and dropped catches rescued the home side with a 6th wicket stand = of 100. Butterworth with a brisk 30 pushed Alderley to 170. Hasan finished with 4-69 and Halsall 2-40.

The Vale reply was off to a slow start in the face of some tight opening bowlin= g. However at 23 overs the run rate was approachin= g 3 an over as Williamson 29 and Ryan 23 were gaining the initiative for the Vale.= The run chase was set fair and the game delicately poised as the Vale required = 90 runs from the final 15 overs. At this stage it = was imperative for the middle order to fire but only Jack = Halsall 17 and Steve Bottomley 12 got a start as the re= turn of the Alderley opening attack of Berry and Butterworth made life diffic= ult for the Vale middle order. Finally it was left to last wicket pair of Abdul= la and Johnson to see out the last 2 overs as the = Vale run chase fell short.

 2nd XI = Home: Trafford Metrovick 205-7. B= owdon Vale 79 all out. BVCC lost by 126 runs.

 The 2nd XI were= involved in a derby clash with Trafford MV at Priory Street. The visitors some wh= at fortunately posted 205 with Saeed 79 the mainst= ay of the Trafford innings. Neil Edwards 2-46 was the pick of the Vale bowling. In reply although Faupal, Allen and Willson all made double figures, they were unable to go on and make significant contributions. The highlight of the Vale innings was a knock of 16 by 14 ye= ar old Jack Ryan as the Vale failed to cope with the bowling of Pomfret 5-36.

Wednesday 25th June:

Over 40’s: Bowdon Vale 130-5: Bramhall 116 all out.= BVCC won by 14 runs.

Saturday 21st June:

1st XI Home: Bowdon Vale 143-9. Lymm OP 144-1. BVCC= lost by 9 wickets.

The 1st XI returned to earth with a bump after last week’s emphatic victo= ry at Wilmslow. Despite persistent Saturday morning rain, Priory Street was in remarkably dry condition for the visit of Lymm OP and play got underway at the scheduled 1:30pm start. Upon winning the toss, skipper Mark Nicholas elected to bat first. After a slow start Ryan 22 and Williamson 26 gradually improved the Vale run rate. Lancaster 17 and Saleem 29 helped the Vale to close on a competitive total of 143, considering a dr= ying wicket and damp outfield.  It = was imperative for the Vale to make early inroads into the Lymm top order. Despite a lively opening spell from N. Hasa= n it was Lymm opener S. Knowles with a hard hitti= ng 100 who saw the visitors to victory with wickets and over’s to spare.

2nd XI Away to Castol.  Match abandoned due to rain.<= /o:p>

Saturday 14th June:

1st XI Away: Bowdon vale 233-5. Wilmslow 138 all out. Bowdon Vale won by 95 runs.

What could prove to be the turning point in a so far dismal season for the Vale = 1st XI, they recorded an emphatic 95 run victory at Wilmslow. The Vale were boosted by the temporary return of Andy Shakespea= re and new signing from Ashley, N.Hasan. Skipper Halsall decision to bat first on a hard flat track was proved spot on as openers Nicholas and Ryan got the Vale off to a brisk sta= rt with 50 coming up in the 12th over. From this point onwards the Vale were always in total command. Ryan fell for 22, however Nicholas who went on to finish with a fine 61 and was particularly severe o= n ex Pakistani international Mahoob. After the loss = of a further couple of wickets the highlight of the Vale innings saw skipper Halsall 61 not out and Bottomley= 45 not out take the Wilmslow attack apart with a stand of 100 in the final = 10 over’s. Both innings featured some huge blows on the small Wilmslow ground, one in particular from Bottomley looked destined for the London bound platform of the nearby Wilmslow station. The = Vale innings closed on 233-5.

In reply Wilmslow could not have been off to a worse start, as second ball Hasan took an excellent caught and bowled to dismiss = the dangerous Mahoob. Matters improved further for = the Vale as the dangerous Buys was comfortably run out by = Bottomley and Jack Halsall. The Vale = were now in complete control and it was a question of whether they could prise o= ut the home side. Matters looked bleak for the Vale as a stubborn 6th wicket partnership occupied 17 overs which looked to h= ave saved the game for Wilmslow. Shakespeare was particularly impressive with figures of 7-5-5-0 during his spell. However the reintroduction of Jack Halsall and Hasan into th= e attack completely blitzed the home side. Backed up by some enthusiastic fielding a= nd catching, Hasan broke the stubborn partnership = and Jack Halsall ran through the late order to fini= sh with match winning figures of 6-39.

2nd XI Home: Wilmslow 198-7. Bowdon Vale 86 all out. BVCC lost by 112 runs.

The 2nd eleven entertained Wilmslow at Priory Street. Batting first the visitors posted 198-= 7, Afzal 4-56 and James Callwood 1-17 the pick of the Vale bowlers. In reply a weakened Vale batting line up struggled to make any real impression as only Roberts 27 and Allen 18 reach= ed double figures.

2nd XI KO Cup: BVCC 128-3 Mere 116 all out. BVCC won by 12 runs.

The 2nd XI pulled off a giant killing act against Division ‘A’ side Mere in the 20 over league KO cup. Batting first Johnson 34 not out and Saleem 67 not out put together a match winning partne= rship of 115 as they gave the Vale an excellent total to defend. Mere had no answ= er to fine bowling spells from Paul Allen 2-10 and Abdul = Afzal 3-20 which was backed up by some enthusiastic fielding, as the Vale marched into the next round despite a few scares, with comfortable 12 run victory. =
